This is used to extend my Netflix lan streaming and it works like a charm.
I assume that NetGear has updated it through the years fixing earlier problems. I haven't had any problems the way some other reviewers mention. Turn on the cable modem and wait for it to initialize.2. I do follow the turn-on-order given in the instructions that came with the router:1. Our office network specialist said I needed a router instead of the switch; and he suggested several brands including Net Gear. Several weeks ago I bought a new Dell laptop with Windows Vista business edition to connect from home to the Windows network at my office.
I first connected both the iMac and the Dell to the cable modem by way of an ethernet switch. But only one of the machines could access the internet -- whichever one I turned on first. It looks like this router model # has been available a long time. Our office network specialist suggested configuring the router to use different local IP addresses so as not to conflict with the local IP addresses at the office. It's only because of this that I didn't rate it 5 stars. Both computers now can access the internet simultaneously. I haven't had to turn the router off and then back on. This was easy to do.
This seems strange since one wouldn't need a router unless there are at least two computers. Therefore, even though there are already a lot of reviews, a current one might be useful. Background: For several years I've used my iMac to access the internet from home through a Time Warner cable modem and Earthlink as my ISP. Turn on the router and wait for it to connect to the internet thru the cable modem.3. I selected the Net Gear from the ones he suggested just because it looks nicer to me.Setup: It was easy to setup for my first computer, the iMac; but rather confusing for the 2nd computer, because the instructions don't specifically cover setting up more than one computer. But after guessing what the setup wizard was expecting, I got the 2nd computer configured also. Only then do I turn on one or both computers.I also connect the Dell laptop to our network at work through a VPN connection and this works fine. Using my web browser I accessed the configuration software built into the router, and changed the default from 192.168.1.xxx to 192.168.2.xxx.
This Netgear wired router replaced an earlier version that required constant re-booting. It works with the internal wiring of a house to connect two or more computers in dfferent locations. Being hard wired vs wireless no signal can be picked up by others external to the home. Its installation is simple and so far without any problems in its operation.
Very odd, but tech support confirmed. I still use wired ethernet in my home - its faster and more secure. But when I switched to Comcast in this area I discovered they use a non-standard netmask for which my existing Cisco can't be configured. Anyway, the new Netgear box is easier to configure and maintain, and about 5 years newer. I've had it a couple of months and no problems so far.
Great product. Needed a little help with set up and got it from customer service. Great service.
